The role of preventative dentistry is to prevent oral health issues before they start. The health of your teeth and mouth is important to the well-being of your entire body. While routine brushing and flossing at home is necessary to keep your smile looking its best, visiting us for a comprehensive dental exam and teeth cleaning is essential.
The American Dental Association recommends that you visit us every 6 months to ensure your smile stays healthy and beautiful.
Benefits of Preventative Care
By routinely seeing your dentist for exams and cleanings, you can:
- Prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath
- Save money by avoiding costly
and extensive dental procedures
- Enjoy a beautiful healthy smile
- Keep your teeth white by reducing
stains from foods and drinks
During your exam, our dentists will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other health problems. We may also take digital dental x-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. The teeth x-rays provided will help our dentists discover oral health issues not visible to the naked eye.
During your appointment, one of our highly trained hygienists will examine your teeth to determine if you have any cavities. Our hygienist will also examine the quality of your existing tooth restorations. If periodontal disease is present, our team will recommend the proper treatment. A periodontal exam helps us monitor the bone level surrounding your teeth.
Your hygienist will use an air-polisher to remove any plaque, bacteria, and debris from your teeth. Air-polishing is a new technique, eliminating the need for abrasive polish. It is highly effective, efficient, and safer for your overall health as it reduces how much bacteria is introduced to the blood stream during the scaling process. Once polishing is complete, your hygienist will use specialized instruments to remove the remaining calculus.
To finish your dental cleaning appointment, your hygienist may recommend a topical fluoride treatment if necessary. Based on your individual needs, your hygienist will review your daily home care routine and recommend any additional products.
We recommend that you brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes and floss once daily. Keep in mind that an electric toothbrush is much more effective than a traditional manual toothbrush. We offer both Sonicare and Oral-B products, for your convenience.
